Going through some files I came across some M. Barney stuff I have multiple copies of. Its all from Walker Art Center in Mpls. where I worked for 10 years. Send me a private message if you would like any of the following-

Cremaster retrospective poster 17"x24" , 1
Crem. retro 8"x10", folds out, 5pcs.
Crem. 3, 6"x 8" 2 different images, 7pcs. each
Walker commisioned billboard image (see pic gallery) 6"x9", 8pcs.

Although free, lavish gifts and large sums of money will be accepted, you know, to cover postage ;-)

Anyone see the article in today's SF Chronicle (Fri 6-23)?

Titled "Slippery sculpture oozes into SFMOMA" it's about how problematic 1600 gallons of liquid petroleum jelly was for Matthew Barney to install his new show which, by the way, is pretty impressive. I wondered how they got that one piece there...

A simple question...

Can you answer it for me?...

The field emblem / coat of arms for Cremaster 2 has two flags surmounting a honeycomb - I recognize the USA flag, but what country does the flag on the right represent? Is it a province of Canada?

And the two dates at the bottom of the emblem: 1977 is the year of Gary Gilmore's execution, but what is 1893 about??...

Insertion of Needles

How do you interpret Barney's use of needles in the cycle?

I've not yet completed the cycle, so I admit that this question is a bit short sighted; but I am anxious for your insight.

In C4, the nymphs carefully insert needles into Barney's shoes before he begins his spiraling tap dance descent into the waters....

In C-5, the Queen inserts needles into the magician hair? (I was a bit distracted at this moment of the film, but I noticed the recurrent needle, none the less.)

Thoughts?

Are there more needles in the cycle?

ebay bootlegs

recently a number of cremaster bootlegs appeared on ebay -- i just noticed this morning that ebay yanked them. i wonder if it was per barney & co's request.

which got me thinking. how do folks feel about bootlegs of barney? it's not like he's a record company wanting to shut down filing sharing . . . it's per the artist's wishes that only 10 authorized copies of each film exist on the art market.

on the other hand, i imagine barney's not exactly a starving artist and the idea of making films exclusively for the wealthy rubs me the wrong way.

on the other hand again, the films probably couldn't have been funded if the artist hadn't promised to enforce this artificial scarcity. (i'm assuming the way it works is that barney gets loans to make the films then pays back the loans with proceeds from the exclusive sales).

but on the other hand one last time, there was probably enough demand for the cremaster films by the time 2 came out that the money used to shoot 2 & 3 could have been recouped by DVD sales alone . . .

What does it all mean?!?

Hey, I'm new to this tribe, we've probably discussed it before, but I'm interested to know what some of you think about the overriding and underlying themes of these films? I'm sure some of you have read through the 'big book' (main catalog on the Cremaster Cycle that the Guggenheim published at the time of the big exhibition) and familiarized yourselves with the central ideas of Masonic theory and practice, Celtic mythology, genetics and physiology, etc, that play a major role in constellating Barney's 'self-contained universe' in the Cremaster movies...

But what are your personal impressions and ineterpretations?... Like: petroleum jelly? Does MB's preoccupation with this substance somehow relate to the central enabling role of petroleum in world civilization as we know it? (fuel for energy, ingredient in plastics, necessary for transport, electricity, basically our entire economy is built on OIL...) - But that's just one facet...

After viewing Cremaster 3 for the first time (it was the first film in the cycle I witnessed), my fundamental interpretation was/is this - MB is critiquing the decay of culture/morality/integrity in post-WWII America, the replacement of ideals such as character and honor and leadership by a crass value system in which MONEY and PROFIT are the ultimate and sacrosanct goals and measures of progress and merit - Ex: the auto demolition scene - Five late-model Cadillacs gang up on a beautiful elegant early-model sedan (what is it, a Rolls? a Bentley? I forget) and destroy it, pulverize it, by running into it in reverse, as though we are no longer advancing but regressing in terms of our cultural evolution - And then the Cadillacs set about, like cutthroat capitalists, destroying each other - The big book touches on the theme and role of *hubris* in all of this... Leftists (like myself) may disagree to some extent, but MB is presenting a vision of an earlier (pre-WWII) ruling class which viewed itself (rightly or wrongly) as moral and cultural leaders of society, where things like manners and breeding mattered (now all that matters is one's Fortune 500 rating in the corporate echelon and oligarchy) - Integrity has been replaced by bare-assed greed and cynical materialism - Without wishing to gloss over the genocidal and imperialist history of the US, there was a time when our political leaders were men of culture and learning, and when a ne'er do well oaf like GWB as President would have been unthinkable - We are truly in the terminal stages of the decline of empire, and this is one of the things MB is showing us...

Whereas Cremaster 2 (my personal favorite of the cycle) similarly portrayed the death of idealism but from the perspective of the last American outlaw - Gary Gilmore lived out his life in accord with Bob Dylan's famous line "To live outside the law you must be honest"...

Well, those are a few of my own impressions - What do the rest of you think?...

where did you first see cremaster?

i was put onto it by a friend, just in time for the london showing of it; saw all five in a day. my head did hurt by the end of that marathon session (there were breaks!) but i think it must be the only way to see them really, to become immersed in the myths and narrative and iconology.

i'm considering buying the book too, but it doesnt come near the films obviously

Upcoming Barney projects

The Walker Art Center has commissioned two new works, the first is a billboard titled "A Penumbra da Lamina ( Penumbra of the blade)". Some of the imagery was inspired by the Candomble religion. It will be up Nov.15-Jan.15. The second will be an installation when we re-open the museum in the spring. I have no idea what it will be like but I'll post again when I get more info.

Cremaster 3 Exerpts

Not thrilled with the way fast forward/menu/advance is locked out for sections, but it's nice sections and images available for perusal. I didn't notice, for instance, the cliimbing runners down the from of the the initiate, with sets of carabiners where he clipped himself onto the wall sets at the Guggenheim.

Greetings Cremaster fans,

I am new to this tribe and never thought of looking for it -- Barney's films are really the only "fine art" that I find worthy in the world of academia. I first met Barney at a gallery in Beverley Hills when a theater near Venice was screening CM 3 and 4.

THEN about a year later in '99 my friend calls me to tell me that he was cast in CM 2, so I got to go to the cast screening previous to it's release and was just blown away even more at this one!! The book is gorgeous too -- amazingly designed like all his work -- I just am so glad that other people out there appreciate his work. I think that Kembra Pfhaler did an amazing job in this film as well, and she is in the credits only as "anonymous".

I wasn't hugely impressed with the setup though, room has awesome sound (the speakers are so fat there's a warning for people with pacemakers in case the electric signals interfere)

and the two tv screens are pretty small - but then most people viewing aren't sitting and watching it end to end.

Climber Barney

In the movies, we see Barney climbing around different sets. He is a great climber? Does he just want to show off his muscles? Or is there some other symbolic meaning to his physical feats? What do you think?

I think the stuff he was climbing was pretty easy so it would be hard to tell from the movie if he was an amazing climber. But I think he has the body of a climber which may allow one to conclude that he is a serious climber.

... per. Sean's suggestion, I thought I'd just start a whole new subject on the matter... so we don't have to sift thru 30+ other messages to get to this.

Me: Agnostic Front vs. Murphy's Law in the Guggenheim.

Old-school punk-rock gal, it hit a soft spot in my heart. Also, the kids slam-dancing with white gloves was a hillarious detail- tying the event into taking place at a froo-froo art gallery. Richard Serra all the while was doing his vaseline spatterings upstairs, was just dang funny.

The whole Guggenheim "The Order" part of C3 was awesome... as for me it perfectly tipified absurdity, though with nice solid meaning where intended.

The Isle of Mann stuff I thought was kinda cool, because I also am a huge Motorcycle Racing fanatic... and the equivalent to the Daytona 200 for International Motorcycle Racing, is the Isle of Mann TT. Beautiful cinematography... but, what the f*ck? Cool elements, no purpose... huh? Absurdity for absurdity worked as put above, but here... despite the georgeous shots of the Isle, and very cool footage of Barney crawling through Vaseline intestines... uh... why... huh?

I don't want my money back... just maybe a key to my confusion with the dang point of the above. It was darn pretty, but...

So the only thing standing between me and my dream costume this Halloween was not being able to find pastel pink tartan.

Well, that and the fact that my wife wouldn't let me amputate and replace her legs with acrylic prosthetics. But other than that, finding pastel pink tartan.

I'm starting early for next year. Anyone know their tartans well enough to help me identify and/or find a source? I *really* want to appear as the Entered Apprentice next year.

Blueprint mag. article

Hey All-

I finally read the copy of Blueprint I bought a few weeks ago, with Barney on the cover... and the article was fabulous. It shed refreshing light on Barney's process, and thoughts in approaching Cremaster.

The DP for C3 was in-person speaking after the viewing of C3 that I saw, and when he was repeatedly asked "what's the point of all this?" he regularly answered with nebulous "well... Matthew has his reasons..." and leave us hanging. The article refreshingly gave some continuity to Barney's captivation with the conception process, ideas of fertility, and the male/female coming together to make one scenario. Very abstract, though interesting... and surprisingly, despite the usual ambiguity, very clarifying.

Highly reccommend chasing it down... and hopefully ignoring my crappy grammar and spelling.

help me comprehend

this seems like an inappropriate post for this tribe in particular, but i have a question.

the great thing about art is that you can love it or hate it. i appreciate people who hate a particular piece of art that I might like, because at least it created some sort of reaction.

that being said, i have seen cremaster. and i hated it. i thought it was matthew barney self-promotional garbage. that there was absolutely no depth to the movies. that visually interesting at moments it was conceptual nonsense. i really would like those several hours of my life back.

can someone explain to me why i am wrong, because i rarely meet people who hate cremaster as much as I did - everyone seems to love it, but i find that most people love it without being able to explain why it's so great without using vague references like 'visual poetry' or 'what music would look like if it were film.' I find those explanations as nonsense too.

so can someone shed some light on this for me?

New Yorker Piece Online?

The New Yorker ran an absolutely brilliant piece on Matthew Barney last year (I believe), focusing on Cremaster 3 and the new (at the time) Cremaster exhibit at the Guggenheim.

I had this article for a while, but ultimately wound up mailing it to a friend. Of course I didn't make a copy for myself.

Does anyone know if this story exists online anywhere?
